Be Yourself - Audioslave

This song is fun to play, especially if you have a Wah Pedal. It is played with a Capo on fret 2. The part that gets more intense in the solo should be played funk style, which means that you strum all the string muted except for the notes indicated.

Dreams - Fleetwood Mac

It is a simple song to play with a band, but quite challenging to make interesting when played with a guitar only, as it is the same thing almost the whole song.

Below the Lead Sheet is the music sheet for the lead guitar for the whole song. There is delay, reverb and he uses a volume pedal to get the notes to come out ghostly sounding by starting with no volume or very little while plucking the note and increasing the volume when the notes resonate.

Second Hand News - Fleetwood Mac

This song is simple on the surface, but it requires a lot of energy to keep the strumming going the whole song and there is a second guitar part that is hard to replicate. The chords are simple, but pay attention to the strumming and the DS on measure 14 that takes you back to measure 3.

The Solo is below the lead sheet. It’s in F# Minor Pentatonic scale position 1 and 2.

During the Verse and Chorus, there is second guitar that plays harmonics and high pitch chords. From my research, it is played with a Nashville Tuning which consist of changing the lower 4 strings of the guitar to a lighter gauge, in order to tune those strings one octave higher. I am not sure about that, as I don’t have a guitar to try this with, but if someone knows more about it, please give me a shout at patrice@paliatsky.com.

Speak to Me - 10 000 Maniacs

The intro and chorus are played with triads on the first three strings. The Verse is played with open chords strummed and arpeggiated. Watch out for the DS on measure 17 that takes you back to measure 9. Also, pay attention to the measure of 2/4 in the Verse.

I Miss You - Incubus

The time signature in this song is interesting as it is feels a bit like 6/8 in the chorus because of the half time feel, but in the verse it feels like 6/4. In the end, it doesn’t matter, it sounds good. Pretty simple song to play. The guitar is tuned in Drop D. It is the same riff in the intro and Verse, but in the latter it is palm muted. The Chorus is simply strummed.

This song is fast and uses a lot of Barre Chords. It is very short, but still has three verses, two and a half choruses and a bridge; it’s quite impressive.

What's Up - Four Non-Blondes

This is a great strumming song. Note that on the last beat of every measure, she removes her fingers to get to the next chord, that is what gives this strumming pattern its iconic sound. Below the Lead Sheet is the music sheet for the Lead Guitar that plays throughout the song.

Torn - Natalie Imbruglia

This is a good strumming song. In the recording there is a main acoustic guitar written below, but there are also a few other electric guitars play arpeggios of the chords in the pre-chorus and a simple repeated pentatonic pattern in the chorus (D - F - D - G - D - F - D - G - D - F). The solo at the end is played with a slide and the notes are F - C - D - A and on the third time he plays F - C - D - F - D - A.

People Are Strange - The Doors

Great challenging song both for the rhythm and the solo part. The latter is fast and technical. Watch out for the repeats. Note that the tempo changes throughout the song, as it wasn’t recorded with a metronome like nowadays, but the good ol’ way of feeling the music.

Yesterday - The Beatles

In the recording, Paul McCartney played with his guitar in Standard D Tuning (D,G,C,F,A,D) , but in his performances with the Beatles, they played it in Standard E Tuning. This song is played in a fingerpicking style where your thumb plays the bass note of every chord and your fingers play the other strings, mainly the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings.

At the end of the song, Paul plays the D8, C#8 and C8 in a C chord shape and alternates with an open G string. It’s a little bit like in Blackbird.

The tuning for this song is Drop C# which means that your guitar is tuned a half step down lower than standard tuning and your 6th string is a C# (Db).
